During
the “Purification Sea Patrol”, believers will accompany the divine palanquins
on a round trip to patrol Yehliu Harbor three times and unload the catch from
the ship. This symbolizes the safe return of fishing vessels laden with a
bountiful catch.

Over a hundred strong young male believers, having fasted and cleansed themselves before this religious ceremony, will jump into the ice waters of Yehliu Harbor in the resounding cheers and lively drum beats in winter, and then disembark on the opposite shore. The young men rushing into the waters of Yehliu Fishing Harbor symbolize the expulsion of wandering spirits and wild ghosts. This act signifies the divine harbor purification and serves as a prayer for the well-being of the people, favorable weather, and national prosperity.
One of the most awe-inspiring cultural experiences of the Yehliu Lantern Festival. Open to public registration, this event is led by professional personnel and invites participants to leap together into Yehliu Fishing Harbor to experience the centuries-old ritual of “entering the water and emerging through fire.” Through sincere participation, attendees pray for peace and safety. Registration is limited, and members of the public are invited to join this extraordinary cultural event.
The young men carrying the divine palanquin will also walk barefoot through the charcoal fires for three rounds. This ritual symbolizes the dispelling of bad luck and the ushering in of good fortune. Finally, in the resounding drum beats, they will perform a circumambulation prayer, seeking blessings to safeguard the locals for a safe sea journey and a plentiful fishing harvest.
